Wester Ross Biospere win Nature Capital Award
The 2022 SCDI (Scottish Council for Development and Industry) Highlands and Islands Business Excellence Awards were held on Tuesday 15th November, at the Drumossie Hotel in Inverness, hosted by comedian/impressionist Rory Bremner. At the event Wester Ross Biospere won one of the key awards.
Wester Ross Biosphere won the category for the Stromar Award for Excellence Natural Capital, Climate Change and Sustainable Communities.
Wester Ross Biosphere General Manager, Natasha Hutchison: “Sustainability isn’t an end goal, it’s a way of living. Businesses and social enterprises are crucial in making the difference. Whether it is net zero, reversing rural population decline or upskilling our young workforce, communities need to be empowered to create a more equal, social and sustainable world.”
Wester Ross UNESCO Biosphere is a community-led and owned non-governmental organisation. Our goal is to create a forum to share knowledge and best practice by working collectively with our communities and stakeholders.
Highland Experiences Ltd is a supporter of Wester Ross Biosphere under its brand Gairloch Canoe and Kayak Centre. Cory Jones our director has, until recently, sat on their board.
As a supporter we at Highland Experience feel our role is to help inform and educate visitors to the area about its special qualities. On our trips our guides and instructors will tell guests about the biosphere reserve, local wildlife and geology, culture and history. We even try and teach a bit of Gaelic too!
Wester Ross is a vast place (around 5200 square kilometres) with a low population density – one of the lowest in Europe, with just 1.6 people per km2. However small though, its communities weave the fabric of life through traditional music, ceilidhs, crofting, and the Gaelic language.
Mountains, trees and seas are the dominating elements of a Wester Ross view. Lochs, glens, sea, rocks, rainbows, waterfalls, dark skies and fresh air complete the broad-brush picture of the landscape.
In 2016, the Biosphere was expanded too over 100 times its original size, and now covers 5,200 square kilometres of Wester Ross and Lochalsh, one of the UK’s most scenic and least-populated areas. The new-style biosphere is a place where people live and actively learn about their surroundings to inspire a legacy rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
Come and enjoy one of our experiences kayaking in Wester Ross.
