Gray Whale Watching, Baja Mexico

Gray Whale watching

Gray Whale Watching, Baja Mexico

In February 2023 our Director, Cory Jones, went to Mexico to sea kayak in the Sea of Cortez. As part of that trip he also went Gray Whale watching at the unique gray whale watching camp, Baja Mexico.

This turned out to be an amazing experience and one of the most incredible close-up wildlife encounters on the planet. Not only where views of the whale gob smacking the tented camp was also fabulous. The whales in the bay travelling along the shore and in view of the tents. This exclusive base camp is situated on a secluded island beach at the very heart of whale activity in Magdalena Bay, one of the major calving lagoons for gray whales.

The gentle giants are here at the height of their calving season. It has been a safe haven for the whales for hundreds of years.  From the safety of motor skiffs you can view the whales closely and sometimes they allow you to reach down and touch them!

Magdalena Bay is a series of lagoons sheltered from the Pacific Ocean by low barrier islands and is the world-renowned winter nursery grounds of the California Gray Whale. January through March, hundreds of gray whales mate and bear their young in these protected waters after traveling over 5000 miles from the Bering Strait. The gray whale calving lagoons gained acclaim in the early 1970s when a gray whale contacted a local fisherman, allowing him to pat her head. Word spread of this remarkable occurrence both among the fishermen and apparently among the gray whales, who now eagerly approach whale-watching boats and interact freely with guests onboard.

The gray whale lagoons in Baja enjoy strict federal protection, and one can only whale watch with a licensed tour operator. Breaching, spy-hopping and fluking, the whales captivate your attention with their behaviour.

This was an incredible trip. Can you imagine enjoying breakfast with whales breaching just offshore, or hear their rhythmic blows lull you to sleep. I watched the whales from my tent door whilst lying on my camp bed!
