Scotland voted best National Geographic as a best place for nature in the world
Once again Scotland is listed by National Geographic as one of the best places in the world to visit as a tourist. This year the reason to come is to enjoy “nature”. This mainly down to the countries huge efforts to rewild. A movement to return native flora and fauna to the Scottish Highlands is gaining steam. Scotland is where travellers can see the work in action.
At Highland Experiences we are in a wonderful position to take a look at Scotland’s forests.
In Gairloch we are surrounded by the rare and unique Atlantic Rainforest, our oak dominated woodland with a rich bryophyte component. At our centre in Loch Ness we are just a stones throw from the Trees For Life’s new rewilding education centre. Much of the Great Glen where our Loch Ness Centre is based is already afforested and there are plans to plant more trees over the coming years.
The non-profit organization Trees for Life is opening a centre in Dundreggan to educate the public on the concept of rewilding. This is due to open in 2023.
Above Inverness, the 23,000-acre Alladale Wilderness Reserve has already planted nearly a million trees, runs a breeding program to reintroduce the native Scottish wildcat, and has a longer-term plan to bring back wolves. And most ambitiously, the Affric Highlands project will start restoring 500,000 acres stretching from Loch Ness to the west coast in a 30-year initiative that could make Scotland the planet’s first rewilded nation.
