Paddle round Longa Island, Gairloch
Here is a link to a lovely blog written by Mandy E Rush about her paddle round Longa Island adventure.
“We had spoken about paddling around Longa many times and when the conditions were right, (dead calm for me!), we were always busy, or tired, or or or… This week however we found ourselves with a spare day or two and the flexibility to wait until conditions were nearly perfect.
We packed the canoes onto Cory’s van, a packed lunch of oatcakes and cheese and layered up with clothing, knowing it is always a little colder on the water. The access to the jetty is via Sands Campsite, and for a reasonable £2 (2018), we got to park there all day as we headed on our mini-adventure.
We took off heading round Longa Island just off Big Sands in Gairloch. It was a great day, a bit of chop on the south side of the island for our great paddle round Longa. We landed at Eag Mhor, the large boulder beach. The tide was out and this meant we clambered on all fours over the slippery green boulders and kelp. Cory pulled the kayaks up over the boulders and we headed up past the debris of welly boots, ropes, fish crates, plastic bottles, hard hats and driftwood to find a sheltered patch away from the wind, as conditions had now changed and the wind had a bite to it!”
