Did You Know… There’s a Hidden Stone Circle in Inverness?

Hidden Stone Circle in Inverness (Raigmore / Stoneyfield)

Most people head straight to Clava Cairns when they want to see standing stones. But just behind modern Inverness, near Raigmore Hospital, there’s a prehistoric site that many people walk past without ever realising what they’ve found.

The Raigmore Cairn, also known as Stoneyfield, dates back around 3600 BC. What looks like a simple stone circle is actually part of a much larger ceremonial site, including a cairn, burial cists, and the remains of a timber structure. This was not just a circle. It was a place of ritual, burial, and meaning.

One of the most remarkable parts of its story is that the stones are not in their original position. During construction of the A9 in the 1970s, the site was excavated and then carefully moved and rebuilt nearby, stone by stone, by local volunteers.

It’s often described as “the stone circle that walked.”

Today, it sits quietly between the UHI Inverness Campus and the hospital, easy to miss, but once you know it’s there, it completely changes how you see the landscape. Look closely and you’ll notice the lichen covering the stones, a natural indicator of clean air, slowly growing across a site that has already stood here for thousands of years.

This is not just an ancient monument. It is a place that has been used, recorded, moved, and saved.
