A Short Walk, 4,000 Years Back in Time: Cup and Ring Marks Near Plean
Most people drive past Cowie and Plean without realising one of Scotland’s oldest prehistoric landscapes is hidden nearby. Scattered across rocky outcrops are ancient cup and ring marks, mysterious carvings created during the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age thousands of years before Scotland had written history.

These carvings were made by carefully pecking hollows and rings into stone using harder rocks. Some are simple circles, while others form more complex patterns linked by grooves and channels. Archaeologists still debate what they meant. They may have marked rituals, boundaries, gatherings, or something entirely lost to time.
The walk itself is an adventure through fields, old tracks and open countryside, with the excitement of searching for carvings hidden among the rocks. Once you spot the first one, it suddenly feels as though prehistoric Scotland is still alive in the landscape around you.
