The 5 best beaches in and around Gairloch

Gairloch Beach

Gairloch beach is one of the best beaches in and around Gairloch as it is a safe, sheltered sandy beach with a backdrop of dunes, Gairloch beach is popular with families as it is a short walk from the large carpark and has toilets. It is a perfect place to launch a sup board which you can hire from Gairloch kayak centre.

Big Sands Beach.

Big sands beach is a long and sprawling sand and shingle beach on the road from Gairloch to Melvaig; with lots of space it never feels too crowed. The beach is sheltered from the prevailing wind by the island Longa. From Big Sands beach you get amazing views of Skye’s Cuillin Ridge, the Torridon mountains and the outer Hebrides on a clear day.

Kerrysdale Beach (only accessible by boat)

A small sandy beach hidden away from view, only accessible by boat. The best way to get to Kerry beach is to kayak there with Gairloch kayak centre who will take you there in high quality sea kayaks with a local guide who will tell you about all the amazing wildlife at the beach.

Redpoint Beach

There are two spectacular sandy beaches at Redpoint which can be combined in a circular loop walk or enjoyed separately. The furthest north beach is closest to the car park accessed through a field which often has cows, sheep and horses grazing so please be careful with dogs.

Far Redpoint is accessed through the farmyard and has spectacular views of the Torridon mountains and Skye to the south, and is steeped in history. You will see the remains of an old salmon bothy and the anchors used for all the fishing boats. A fantastic beach to sit and enjoy the wonders of Scotland.

Mellon Udricle beach

17 miles north of Gairloch, hidden along a dead-end single track rock is a little slice of paradise, which feels like the Caribbean more than Scotland with its white sand and turquoise water. On its own, the beach would be well worth going out of your way to visit. But what makes it really special is a distant mountain vista possibly unequalled from any low level viewpoint in Scotland. To the north-east the views include the distinctive side-on profile of Suilven, near Lochinver, some 25 miles distant, and carry on round taking in the mountains of Coigach, including – we think – a glimpse of the top of Stac Pollaidh. To the south-east the views conclude with a glimpse of An Teallach before becoming lost in the more local humps and bumps of the peninsula you are standing on between Gruinard Bay and Loch Ewe. All of this combined make Mellon Udricle one of the best beaches around Gairloch.
