Kayaking round Badachro

Badachro

Another great day kayaking round Badachro

Badachro sits about 3 km south of Gairloch on the shore of Gair Loch, and is a natural harbour popular with yachts. It is one of the main areas we take our guests sea kayaking and is a wonderful spot. The area was long renowned for its cod fishing, and Badachro’s growth was as a result of that. When the fishery was in full operation much of the cod landed at Gairloch was dried at Badachro before being shipped to markets in Spain. Today the area’s main catch comprises lobsters, crabs and prawns: and the piles of lobster pots on Badachro’s jetty suggest that the village is still an active base for fishing vessels. Most of the vessels on view in the inlet, however, are leisure craft.

After finishing a kayaking session why not visit the popular Badachro Distillery? The distillery offers small-batch, artisan whisky, gin and vodka from the Scottish Highlands.

Roughly two miles south east of Badachro are the Fairy Lochs, the site of a 1945 plane crash which is now a designated war grave. The crash site has been preserved as a memorial to the USAAF servicemen who lost their lives in the accident, and is accessible by a rough track near the Shieldaig Lodge Hotel.

Queen Victoria visited Shieldaig Lodge Hotel in 1877 but never made it to Badachro village itself as the roads were too bad. Today Shieldaig Lodge is home to the Gairloch branch of Highland Experiences Ltd, along with many other delights including a falconry centre and whiskey bar.
